Sperlonga/Vatican

ciao tutti,

Now that things are freeing up in my last 10 days here I thought I would really blog binge it.

So, in no particular order, here things go again.

First up,

Sperlonga.

This is a small beach town about an hour south of Roma. Originally we had plans to visit the Appenine mountains, specifically the Gran Sasso, around the town of l'Aquila. However, as im sure all of you heard, this town no longer exists due to the earthquake and its aftershocks over the last 12 days. This was kind of a freaky event for us, because we returned from our travels up north to hear that the places that we nearly visited that weekend was now destoyed, with over 200 people dead, and 17,000 homeless. Its a pretty bad situation, and it was made even more real since I nearly booked us a room in the youth hostel that was completly destroyed.

So, instead we went to the beach.

Not too much to say about it. It was a very nice beach, and a great day to just get out of the crazy, pre-easter Roma city, and be with each other for a few hours. We also ate some good gelato.

The following morning we woke up and went to the Easter service in Piazza san Pietro outside the Vatican. It was pretty cool to experience, tons of people from all over the world. A pretty long service, follow by the traditional Pope balcony time when he read a prayer for the people involved in the earthquake, then he said "may Christ be with you" in like 80 languages and everyone cheered when he did theirs. If I can find the pics I will put them up later.

ciao!
